Diagnosis

A. Peponis is larger and darker than its close relative A. hebetata (Butler, 1889). Gamma mark not clearly visible. Forewing ground colour paler olive brown than its sister species. Post median line not clearly visible whereas easily visible in A. hebetata. Male genitalia with thiner cucullus; longer and thicker uncus and vesica with longer and thiner terminal cornuti present. A. hebetata with broader cucullus and terminal cornuti absent.

Description

Wingspan of adults 38-42mm. Larger moths of this subfamily Plusiinae. Adults are stout dark brown coloured with stronger body. Terminal region of forewing having dark patch which is more darker than the ground colour. Femur region of foreleg and midleg tufted with long hair. In male genitalia uncus longer, thicker and darker. Valvae densely covered with hairs, base of the valvae connected forming a buble, clavus shorter. Vesica with longer terminal cornutus present. In female genitalia, corpus bursae longer & without sclerotisation. Ductus bursae shorter & membranous.
